A toast on canvas
Many, many, many little men in black suits fill Guy Buffet's "Ball of the Century," a painting that the part-time Maui resident created to mark the 100th birthday of Perrier-Jouët's signature "Flower Bottle." The painting was unveiled at the Kapalua Wine & Food Festival last month and is now on an international tour marking the champagne's centennial. Buffet's affiliation with Perrier-Jouët began 20 years ago when he was commissioned to paint a sommelier for use in promotional materials. "It's easy being in the champagne business," Buffet says. "You start meeting all the star chefs in the world, start going to all the best restaurants, best hotels and resorts. It's not a very painful commission."
