1969: ‘Wheat germ pasties’
take on a sexy meaning

A reader who is also a "head" hunter spotted this headline in Brand X: "wheat germ pasties," and wondered if they're designed for healthy strippers. (Aug. 15, 1969) ... There, in an innocent-looking envelope from the Army, was a check for $2,592. The Army was purchasing 36 one-year subscriptions to the Star-Bulletin for delivery to such obscure Vietnam camps as Qui Hnon, Phu Bai, Phu Hiep, Vung Tau and hospitals throughout the country. Bound to make local boys rejoice, reading about the folks back home. (Aug. 15, 1969) ...

REUNION time: The St. Louis class of 1925 will hold its 45th-year reunion banquet Aug. 21 at the Top of Waikiki. Of the 73 class members, 45 are still alive. All 73 were college graduates -- the high school was known as St. Louis College in those days. (Aug. 13, 1970) ...

THE Radford High class of '63 will be celebrating its 10th-year reunion Sept. 7 by attending Radford grad Bette Midler's concert at the HIC Concert Hall. The Aiea gal will be performing Sept. 6 at the HIC as well. (Aug. 14, 1973) ...

THIS story sounds too good to be true, but Marilyn Lichton, wife of the president of Temple Emanu-El, swears it's true. The temple, you may recall, is having a sale of items from the Kaiser Estate tomorrow, and a sign reading "Estate Sale" is clearly visible fronting the temple. The other day, a Japanese couple stopped by, and Mrs. Lichton was in the office. The visitors asked if they could look around, and Mrs. Lichton gave them a grand tour, at the conclusion of which the couple said they liked what they saw, and could Mrs. Lichton please give them the name of the party their agents should contact as regards buying the place. She then had to explain that 1) The temple was not an "estate"; 2) It was not for sale in any case; and 3) Only things like dishes and sheets would be available for purchase. Apparently, however, the Japanese are still in the market for Hawaiian land. (Aug. 14, 1974) ...

AS Millie Jue Ti of the UH Library was cataloging a publication called "Chinese Americans; A Brief History," she happened to glance through it and found, "Patsy Mink was elected to the U.S. Congress from Hawaii in 1964." Millie wrote the publisher to inform him that the information was correct, but Mink is of Japanese ancestry and her husband, John Mink, is Caucasian. Perhaps the author thought she was from the Mink Dynasty. (Aug. 13, 1976) ...

LOTS of folks are discovering Serge Battistetti's new Italian eatery, Sergio's, in the Ilima Hotel. Mayor Eileen Anderson lunched there with Cabinet members recently, and that same night, Lucy Blaisdell, widow of late Mayor Neil Blaisdell, dined there. In addition, recent diners include Tom Selleck and John Hillerman of "Magnum P.I.," Sen. Dan Inouye and Don Ho. (Aug. 11, 1983) ...

HILO deejay George "Granny Goose" Groves, commenting on a news story about the sale of Clare Boothe Luce's Kahala digs, quipped, "Did you realize that if Clare Boothe Luce married Granny Goose, she'd be Clare Boothe Luce Goose?" (Aug. 16, 1983) ...

YOU may have read about the Maori who bared his buttocks to Prince Charles and Diana when they were in Auckland. The fellow was taken to trial recently, and the London Daily Telegraph assigned a reporter to cover it: Ronald Higginbottom. (Aug. 17, 1983) ...

COLOR-coordinated parties must be in. For those showing up for the Hawaii Polo Club's Great Gatsby party Saturday night at the home of Frank "Bamboo" Opperman, white attire is suggested. The Gatsby theme will continue at Sunday's polo matches at Mokuleia where awards will be made for most authentic costume and "grandest entrance." ...

THE latest ad for the Club 501, a hostess bar on Ala Moana, promises "international waitresses serving customers in swimsuits and bikinis." Sorry, but I don't like to wear swimsuits to bars. The same ad says, "TIP New Owner." Also, I never like to tip owners since some find it embarrassing. (Aug. 14, 1986) ...
