Life and service
after a buyout

Marc Resorts Hawaii, recently purchased by Heller-White Hotel Management LLC, is moving forward with plans to commemorate Sept. 11.

"With the anniversary of the tragedy approaching, we felt compelled to honor the men and women who continue to brave their lives for the citizens of our country and show them just a small token of our appreciation," said Matthew Delaney, Marc's chief executive officer.

Marc's kamaaina offer, wherein the second of two nights booked is free, will be extended to military, police, fire and emergency personnel across the United States for the month of September.

The company's Island Colony, Marc Suites Waikiki and Waikiki Royal Suites properties are participating in the program.

Marc Resorts operates 15 properties throughout Hawaii. For more information, call Marc Resorts Hawaii at (800) 535-0085 or visit www.marcre sorts.com.

Also during the month of September a portion of revenue from all 15 Marc properties in Hawaii will be donated to the American Red Cross Hawaii Chapter.

The company will establish a separate account for guests and employees who wish to make additional donations, Berrington said.

In addition, "We're looking into getting everybody up to date on their CPR and first aid," said Marketing Director Brooke Berrington. There will be companywide training with Red Cross instructors.

On a personal note for Delaney, his first child is due in mere weeks, some two years after he was diagnosed with testicular cancer.

Fund-raising firefighters

A $55 to $65 ticket for the Gala Food Bank Headdress Ball at the Hilton Waikoloa Village Hotel or "An Evening in Paradise" at The Orchid at Mauna Lani is not in everyone's budget.

Both are fund-raisers for the Hawaii Island United Way.

The organization has other levels of fund-raising activities to meet differing budgets, such as yesterday's volunteer effort by Big Island firefighters.

In uniform for the duty, firefighters were to bag groceries and act as grocery cart escorts, in return for KTA customers' cash donations, according to Peter Young, county deputy managing director.

Yesterday's first round was planned for the KTA stores in Kailua, Keauhou and downtown Hilo while the KTA Waikoloa store will host the helpful firefighters next Saturday.
