Malindi rallies at HIBT


The Malindi Sea Fishing Club of Kenya pulled in the largest fish of the tournament and won the Hawaii International Billfish Tournament at Kailua-Kona yesterday.

The Kenyans scored 682.5 points thanks to a 482.5-pound Pacific blue marlin caught aboard the charter boat Lady Dee captained by Allan Ayano.

Hilo led going into the final day but settled for second place for the second time in the last five years.

Tournament Anglers of Hawaii edged out the Foxy Lady Fishing Team of Kona in the ahi division, 382-380.

UH volleyball stars to hit the Beach

Members of Hawaii's NCAA champion men's volleyball team, including Jose Delgado, Eyal Zimet and Tony Ching, as well as current Wahine players Lily Kahumoku and Maja Gustin, headline the entries for tomorrow's 5th Aqua Hotels Players Championship on Queen's Beach in Waikiki.

Some 32 teams are expected to compete in the double-elimination men's and women's beach volleyball tournament. Play begins and 8:30 a.m. and continues through late afternoon.

"We're seeing tremendous growth in the sport in Hawaii," said organizer Marc Haine. "We expect this to be one of the best events of the season."

The entry fee is $40 per team. There is no admission charge for spectators.

Kahanamoku meet set for Aug. 24

The Duke Paoa Kahanamoku Waterman Challenge, honoring Hawaii's first Olympian, is scheduled for Aug. 24, Kahanamoku's birthday.

Teams will compete in three events, hukihuki (tug of war) surfing and outrigger canoe races. Competition is from 3-5:30 p.m. on the beach fronting Kalia Bay and the Hilton Hawaiian Village.

Among the teams scheduled to compete are Outrigger Canoe Club, C&K Beach Service, Waikiki Beach Activities and Honolulu City and County Lifeguards. The event is being held in conjunction with the dedication of the Kahanamoku stamp.

As part of the festivities, a one-mile ocean swim will begin at 3:30 p.m.

Long distance season to start in paddling

With the regatta season concluding, it is time for paddlers to turn their attention to the long-distance season, which begins tomorrow.

The Ka'ena Challenge starts at 8 a.m. at Waimea Bay and finishes at Makaha Beach 24 miles and approximately three hours later.

The start of the race is LeManz, requiring the paddlers to run down the beach to get to their boats. A shorter 9-mile race will be held at noon at Makaha Beach with its own awards ceremony afterward.

Duque to defend cliff diving title

Orlando Duque returns to defend his title at the $15,000 Red Bull Cliff Diving competition Aug. 31 off Kaunolu, Lanai.

Participants will dive off a cliff some 80 feet high and be evaluated by five international judges based on takeoff, form and water entry.

Also competing for the $3,600 first prize is 2000 winner Dustin Webster. The event is scheduled from 1-4 p.m.

Bodyboard clinic today in Waikiki

The Association of Women Bodyboarders will hold two free clinics this month, including today at Waikiki Walls.

The public is invited to learn how to bodyboard from Hawaii's top female bodyboarders.

On Aug. 24 the clinic moves to Sandy Beach. Both events will run from 1-3 p.m.

Parker Ranch hosts rodeo on Labor Day

The 28th annual Parker Ranch Round-Up Club Rodeo and Horse Races will be Labor Day weekend, Aug. 31 and Sept. 1.

The event, held at Waimea on the Big Island, will feature daily team roping, double mugging, poo wai u, bull riding, mutton busting, bronc riding, barrel racing, steer un-decorating and wild cow races.

It is a fundraiser to provide financial aid for the education of Parker Ranch employee families.
