700-pound marlin
gets away at Billfish

Yesterday's Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament was more about the ones that got away than anything else.

Richard Weir of the Odyssey team from Northern Ireland described a 700-pound blue marlin this way: "It was like a horse, just massive."

Unfortunately, it wasn't the only fish to shake free. Hawaii Big Game Fishing Club's Young Adults team lost two marlin, including one that might have put them high on the leaderboard.

"When it came in toward the boat it shook its head and just spit the lure out," said Gooch Barchenger.

Despite numerous lost fish and pulled hooks, the international contention did well with three teams putting points on the scoreboard yesterday. The Port Hacking Game Fishing Club from Down Under moved into second place with its second marlin of the tournament and a total of 600 points. The Australians are tied with the Hilo Yacht Club, however, the Hilo team retains first place because it scored earlier in the tournament.

The annual event ends today.
