Honolulu firefighters saved a family dog from a house fire in Aikahi Park yesterday, but the pet and its owners are now homeless.

The fire at 203 Ilihau St. was reported at 3:19 p.m. No one was home except for Cosmo, a King Charles spaniel.

Firefighters found Cosmo in the kitchen where he was dirty and wet though unharmed. The fire was brought under control within five minutes but still caused an estimated $250,000 in damage.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, though it appears that it began in the ceiling of one of the bedrooms, fire officials said.

The Red Cross is providing assistance to the father and son who lived in the home.
