Aloha to wear
and to hear

Captains of industry and the women who love them girded for battle in the 9-to-5 wars at the Reyn's factory sale this week in Iwilei.

"We've had lines," said Kirk Hubbard, senior vice president and chief operating officer. The sale ends tomorrow.

Beyond a local audience, Reyn's has in past years sparked interest from professional shoppers for Land's End Inc. clothing company.

"They had an interest in our product, we had a relationship in the past and they wanted something authentic," said Hubbard. "They came to Hawaii and did research and it was something that was really fun. They featured us on two of their (catalog) covers."

Reyn's wear had been offered in three different Land's End catalogs and on its domestic and foreign Web sites.

What's what on the Web

At least two Hawaii Internet broadcasters joined 17 other small webcasters Wednesday in filing an appeal with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia.

Being appealed are performance royalty rates set June 20 by the librarian of Congress for music streamed over the Internet.

Internet Radio Hawaii (www.irh.com) webcaster Robert "Rabbett" Abbett and www.Hawaiianhits.com webcaster L.D. Reynolds are part of the appeal.

"The webcasters still feel that they are being railroaded out of business," said Rabbett.

An Internet radio station with an average of 1,000 concurrent listeners a month would have to pay $7,686 in monthly performance fees in addition to music licensing fees reputable Webcasters already pay, he said.

"This action is another part of the small webcasters' fight to keep their businesses online," Rabbett said.

A Party party

Usually one must read another column to learn where important people have been seen dining.

Apparently some non-three-dot media types were tipped off in advance to a high-maka-maka lunch and photo opportunity, as big-guns from the Democratic Party gathered at Sunset Grill yesterday complete with news cameras and reporters.

The Party party included U.S. Sen. Dan Inouye, and gubernatorial candidates Andy Anderson and Ed Case, to name a few.
