English nominated for Wooden

Hawaii guard Carl English was named to the John R. Wooden Award Preseason All-American Team yesterday.

English is one of 50 student-athletes competing for one of college basketball's most coveted trophies, and was the only member of the WAC and one of 20 underclassmen on the list.

English was second on the team in scoring (15.5), rebounds (5.1) and assists last season as the Rainbow Warriors put together their best season in history at 27-6.

The Wooden Award was created in 1976 and is given to the nation's best player with a cumulative grade point average over 2.0.

The 2003 Award ceremony will be held April 13 at the Los Angeles Athletic Club.

Tata leaves Huskers to tend to family

Linebacker Tony Tata from Hawaii has left the Nebraska football team.

Coach Frank Solich announced that Tata, a St. Louis School graduate, went back home to deal with some family problems.

Tata, a 6-foot-1, 255-pound senior, never fully recovered from knee surgery after injuring his left knee in spring camp two years ago.

"Tony felt that he needed to be home and to be with his mother and that's understandable," Solich said. "I did mention to him that if ever he wanted to come back to this program and finish his education, that we would definitely take care of that."

Roy approved as coach of Wahine water polo

Michel Roy was approved by the UH Board of Regents to take over the women's water polo program beginning Sept. 1.

Roy will replace Cindy Rote, who coached the team on an interim basis and will remain as an assistant coach.

MPI seeking soccer coaches
