Glory days: Members of Kailua High School's class of 1982 will be out to prove they can still run with the kids on Saturday when they play the current Surfriders boys soccer team.
The game, believed to be the school's first alumni soccer game, is set for 10 a.m. at Kailua's field and is part of the Class of '82's 20th reunion.
To give the younger players an idea of what they'll be facing, the '82 team spontaneously decided to hike up Mount Olomana to take its yearbook photo, including a player with a broken foot.
Lee off to Canton: As speculation about Cal Lee's future continues to swirl, the St. Louis athletic directors' immediate plans call for a trip to the Midwest to represent the state at a gathering of 150 of the nation's top prep and youth football coaches and officials.
Lee, the Crusaders football coach for 21 years before retiring after last season, will represent the state at the NFL Youth Football Summit today through Saturday in Canton, Ohio. The summit is part of the NFL's Hall of Fame weekend and will include educational seminars and workshops with Hall of Famers such as Jim Kelly, Lynn Swann and Bill Walsh serving as speakers.
Also on the list of invitees are Long Beach Poly coach Raul Lara and De La Salle coach Bob Ladouceur. Both coaches will bring their teams to Hawaii in September to face Kahuku and St. Louis in a doubleheader.
Nash gets noticed: A strong showing at the adidas ABCD Camp in Teaneck, N.J., earlier this month has earned Iolani incoming senior Bobby Nash a spot on ESPN.com's list of the nation's top 100 high school basketball players.
Nash, a 6-foot-6 small forward, is ranked 87th on the list topped by heralded LeBron James of St. Vincent-St. Mary High School in Ohio. Nash is also the 20th best small forward in the country, according to the Web site.
Curling on Merchant Street: Hawaii Sports Network will host the "Short Track Curling for Fast Track Learning" fund-raiser at 5 p.m. Sunday at Murphy's Bar and Grill.
The event is a benefit for HSN's Athletic Prep Academy and will feature business teams competing in a "Hawaii-style" curling competition. The teams will be partnered with University of Hawaii coaches June Jones, Riley Wallace and Dave Shoji, UH athletics director Herman Frazier, chef Alan Wong and Murphy's owner Don Murphy.
The fund-raiser will also include a raffle for sports memorabilia.
For more information, call Doris Sullivan at 528-0221, ext. 12.
Iolani swim club recognized: USA Swimming has awarded Silver Medal status to the Iolani Swim Club as part of its new Club Excellence program.
The club's rank is based on its swimmers' best performances in 2001 and 2002 using an international point scale. Iolani Swim Club, coached by Brian Lee, earned 6,244 points over that span.
The program recognizes clubs for excellence in their operation, performance and support of USA Swimming. Out of 2,800 member clubs only 20 have qualified for gold-medal status and 23 achieved silver-medal recognition. Each silver-medal club is eligible for a grant of up to $3,000.
