ndaranciang@starbulletin.comPolice were searching this morning for the driver of the stolen truck who ran off after the collision.
The four men injured in the collision were occupants from the second truck. Two men were in critical condition while a third man was in fair condition this morning at Queen's Medical Center.
The fourth victim was treated and released.
Complete details of the case were not available but police said the pursuit began in Waikiki. Officers spotted the truck about 10 p.m. when it was parked in front of what is believed to be a drug house. A check revealed the truck's license plate was not on record.
As officers approached the truck, it took off. The officers gave chase but lost sight of the truck on Kapiolani Boulevard.
Shortly after, at about 10:15 p.m., the truck, speeding north on Wiliwili Street, ran a stop sign and collided with the other pickup truck traveling west on Citron Street, police said.
The impact spun the second truck around, ejecting the passengers who were in the bed of the truck, police said.
Stefan Downs, who lives in a 16th-floor apartment of the Wiliwili Vista, said the truck spun around two or three times.
Blaring police sirens and the sound of scraping metal attracted his attention, Downs said. He looked out the window and saw the truck "bottoming out" when it hit dips in the road, he said.
"The impact happened so fast they (the stolen truck) were flying, at least 50 mph," Downs said.
"Police were a block behind them, they were right on them, it all happened so quick," he said.
Police arrested the passengers of the stolen pickup truck for investigation of unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle. They are an 18-year-old Foster Village man, an 18-year-old Nanakuli man and a 22-year-old Kapahulu woman.
The injured occupants from the second truck were taken to the hospital by ambulance. Their names were not released, and police were trying to determine the identify of one of the critically injured victims.
The other victims included a 22-year-old man, who was in critically condition, a 28-year-old man who was in fair condition and a 23-year-old man who was treated and released.
