Archive access free

Go ahead and finish that research project now that the Bishop Museum's Library and Archives collections are now open free to the public.

The museum has waived the $3 entrance fee for these collections in hopes of encouraging people to explore the treasure trove of island history. Materials range from recorded chants to historic manuscripts.

A popular feature is the photo collection, which has more than 1 million images of Hawaii and the Pacific dating from the 1840s to the present.

There is also a genealogy collection that can help families trace their ancestry before the next big reunion.

The library and archives are open from noon to 3 p.m. Tuesdays to Fridays and 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays. For more information, call the library at 848-4148 or the archives at 848-4182.

Seeing stars at JCCH

Families are invited to participate in an evening of star-gazing as the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii brings Japan's Tanabata Festival to Hawaii.

The free festival, from 5 to 9 p.m. Aug. 11, is based on the sky story of weaving goddess Orihime and herdsman Kengyu whose forbidden love enraged the Emperor of Heaven. As a result, they were placed as stars on opposite sides of the Celestial River (Milky Way) to meet only once a year.

The festival will feature storytelling and puppetry, sky shows in Bishop Museum's inflatable Starlab planetarium, and stargazing from the JCCH rooftop. Participants may also purchase food and drinks from various booths, and enjoy tanabata decorations, music and dance performances.

JCCH is at 2454 S. Beretania St. For more information, call 945-7633.
