In The Mix

Bikini babes
deserve thanks

LOVE THEM or hate them, we should all be thankful for the local hotties who faithfully enter all those bikini contests around town. Usually it's one of these ladies -- the ringers -- who entertain crowds the most instead of the girl sitting at the table next to you who decides to enter on a whim.

This Saturday, 10 of those beautiful women will compete for the chance to represent Hawaii this fall in the Miss Hawaiian Tropics 2002 national competition. Last year's Hawaii representative Chrissy Sheridan will be at Kapono's to defend her title from the likes of Amy Hayashida, Jody Ribao and Malia Song. Others competing in Saturday's final: Alaine Akau, Malia Kalama, Larene Rinkel, Shinell Rios, Marie Rodriguez and Gissella Rosales ...

NOW IF the new television show "SlamBall" isn't entertainment, I don't know what is. Monday night started off with the normal routine for me: kicking back with a cold beer (or three) and the good ol' boys of "WWE Raw." Suddenly, eight guys dressed in what looked like lacrosse gear were on my television and almost immediately the action picked up in what I'd describe as basketball meets hockey meets the video game "NFL Blitz."

"SlamBall" is definitely a fast-paced sport; four trampolines strategically placed underneath the basket allow for monstrous three-point slam dunks, and players are allowed full contact in the open court and around the basket. When someone does get fouled, he's given a free run at the trampolines and basket, with only the person who fouled him defending the bucket. Way more exciting to watch than free throws, that's for sure.

Monday night's hourlong program was a preview of the upcoming season that's set to air Saturdays at 5 p.m. on TNN. I just hope they keep showing repeats after "Raw," since I don't have TiVo or a VCR and am not at home Saturday afternoons ...

ONE LAST ITEM: As you read this, I've started a long, wild weekend in celebration of my 25th birthday. Big mahalos to Sam the Man's BBQ and Ramen, where you can celebrate too with an "In the Mix Mixed Plate" all month. For only $5.99 you get kalua pig, mochiko chicken and fried mahi -- plus enough leftovers for lunch the next day! Be sure to ask for the "In the Mix Mixed Plate" at Sam the Man's BBQ and Ramen, 98-025 Hekaha St. Call 485-1940 ...

(And remember kids, don't try to copy our man Jason drink-for-drink; he is a certified and accomplished heavy-weight alcohol connoisseur and wouldn't want his readers to follow his example. Jason, of course, is hoping some bar in town will name a drink after him, much like the mixed plate! -- ed.)
