Ma off to national event
after winning playoff


Matthew Ma captured the lone sectional qualifying spot for the United States Amateur Championship yesterday.

Honolulu's Ma beat California's Berry Henson on the second playoff hole at the Makaha Restort Golf Club to advance to the amateur tournament Aug. 19-25 in Bloomfield, Mich.

Ma, an Iolani graduate who will attend Oregon in the fall, shot a 72 in the final round of regulation to tie with Henson at 142.

Ryan Masuda had the day's best round with a 70 and finished third with a 143.

Kamden Ganir and HeeBeom Kim rounded out the top five.

Paddling video wins Telly Award

"One Paddle, Two Paddle," an instructional video on Hawaiian outrigger canoe paddling, has received a Telly Award in the non-broadcast sports category.

The producer-director is Ann Marie Kirk of Honolulu. The video features Anuenue Canoe Club's founder Nappy Napoleon and a number of other island paddlers.

The Telly Awards began in 1980 to recognize outstanding non-network and cable TV commercials and videos.

Basketball tournament looking for teams

Openings are available for teams in the inaugural 808 Challenge 3-on-3 basketball tournament, Aug. 10-11, at the University of Hawaii athletic complex.

Run by former Rainbow Nerijus Puida, the tournament is open to male and female teams in seven age division from 10-13 to 40-over. The entry fee is $100 and due by Saturday.

Sing Chow leads Pearls to national title

NEWBERG, Ore. >> Pitcher Leo Sing Chow went 6-0 as the Pearls won the National Fast-Pitch Softball Alliance girls 18-under summer national tournament last weekend.

Sing Chow, a recent Kamehameha Schools graduate, was named the tournament MVP. She went 3-for-3 to help her own cause in the 8-1 victory over Oregon's Fury in the title game.

Hawaii players named to the all-tournament team were Miki Asamura, Lindsey Fujita, Johnna Rowland, Darcie Takemoto and Jocelyn Tamaya. Other team members were Anuhea Diamond, Lauren Hiramoto, Robin Okawa, Emi Snow and Karyna Wilkerson. The head coach was Stacy Hiramoto with assistants Dwight Okawa, Merv Asamura and Tanya Sing Chow.

Surf champions crowned

OCEANSIDE, Calif. >> Five Hawaii surfers won their respective divisions as the U.S. Surfing Federation Championships concluded last weekend.

Taking home titles were James Clancy (men's bodyboards), Chacity Bernabe (women's bodyboards), Brad Chang (masters surfing), Chuck Boerner (legends surfing) and Tom Kwosh (menehune bodyboards).

Overall, Hawaii participants won 10 divisions, including Nathan Carroll, who claimed the open men's title during the week-long amateur event.
