Wahine place 4 players
on preseason WAC team


DENVER >> The Hawaii women's volleyball team, already picked by coaches to win a seventh-straight Western Athletic Conference title, led all schools with four players named to the preseason all-WAC team announced yesterday.

The Wahine's Kim Willoughby, the 2001 WAC Player of the Year who led the nation and set conference single-season records for kills (850) and kills per game (7.2), was selected the preseason player of the year.

Other Hawaii players earning preseason honors were sophomore Maja Gustin, senior Margaret Vakasausau and former conference player of the year Lily Kahumoku, who returns to the team after sitting out last season for personal reasons.

WAC tickets on sale: Tickets to the WAC volleyball tournament Nov. 22-24 in Reno, Nev., will go on sale Aug. 1.

Tickets are $30 for adults and $15 for children for an all-session pass and they may be purchased by calling (775) 348-7225 and discounted rooms may be found at the Silver Legacy Hotel by calling (800) 687-9733 and requesting the fan rate.

Thomas torches Mexico: Former Hawaii volleyball player Delano Thomas scored a match-high 21 points as the U.S. men's junior national volleyball team defeated Mexico, 25-20, 20-25, 25-20, 25-20, to win the bronze medal at the NORCECA Junior Continental Championship at the Okanagan University College gymnasium last night.

Thomas blasted a match-high 17 kills with a match-high four blocks and earned a spot on the all-tournament team.

Clay contributes to U.S. decathlon win

Former Castle athlete Bryan Clay won the 100-meter dash to help Team USA to a convincing 39,908-37-817 victory at the 2002 USA vs. Germany Decathlon Dual Meet over the weekend at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, California.

Clay, who went to college at Azusa Pacific, ran the sprint in 10.62 seconds and ran the 110-meter hurdles in 14.29 to take second in that event. He didn't do as well in the other events, as he totaled 6,781 points, good for 13th overall in the meet.

Kaimuki's Solia says she will play for Wahine

Kaimuki guard Dalia Solia has verbally committed to the University of Hawaii women's basketball team.

Solia averaged 17 points per game last year for the Bulldogs and will return for her senior year.

"It was a good offer and a chance to stay home," Solia said. "It is nice to know that I have somewhere to go no matter what."

Spiker gets wrestling Hall of Fame award

St. Louis School wrestler Jonathan Spiker has been named the Wrestling Hall of Fame's Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award winner for the state of Hawaii.

The award is based equally on athletic, scholastic and community achievement.

Spiker compiled a record of 119-0 while receiving the top math, english and Japanese student awards at St. Louis last year.
