ndaranciang@starbulletin.comOn Sunday night, police charged Samie Raspado Calaro, 44, with second-degree murder in the death of Ruby Mabanag. Officers found her bleeding from stab wounds to her abdomen and forearms Saturday when they arrived at the Eames Street cottage she shared with Calaro.
According to documents police submitted in court yesterday, Mabanag identified Calaro as her assailant before she was taken to Wahiawa General Hospital, where she later died.
Police arrested Calaro at the cottage. They said he had blood on his hands, arms, bare feet, clothing and baseball cap. He remains in custody in lieu of $75,000 bail. Police said Calaro and Mabanag had an off-and-on relationship for the past five years.
Last October, Calaro's wife sought a temporary restraining order against him for what she claimed was physical and mental abuse. Gina Calaro said the abuse occurred in July and September, according to court records. In her application, she said her husband hit her and threatened to kill her.
A state judge granted the TRO, which was in effect until January. However, state sheriff deputies were not able to serve Calaro with the order because they could not find him. According to court records, Calaro is still married. He could not be reached for comment.
In October 1990, Calaro was arrested for abuse of a household member and terroristic threatening involving another woman.
According to court records, he pleaded no contest and was sentenced to 30 days in prison. However, 28 days were suspended. Calaro was ordered also to undergo anger management counseling, which he completed.
