Fieldturf hits snag
The Stadium Authority's worst fears appear to be materializing, according to a report on KHON-TV 2 last night.
The estimated cost of $877,000 to install Fieldturf could rise to as much as $2 million, the report stated.
"When they (Fieldturf representatives) originally came forward with the $877,000, it was frankly offensive to most of the people on the board because what they were selling us was a bunch of crap," Stadium Authority member Michael Green said.
Fieldturf officials originally quoted the $877,000 figure to put the new surface down, but after an estimate, stadium officials have found that contractors are charging from $1-2 million dollars just to grade the stadium surface, the report said. But they're guaranteeing the work will be done in between the Christmas Day Hawaii Bowl and February's Pro Bowl.
Stadium officials doubt the work can be done in time for the Pro Bowl, and they won't approve any work until the funding question is resolved.
Members of the stadium board plan to meet with the Hawaii Tourism Authority in the next several weeks to resolve the funding question, the report said.
