SALT LAKE CITY >> Former University of Hawaii guard Predrag Savovic scored four points as the Denver Nuggets topped the Chicago Bulls 87-69 in a Rocky Mountain Revue summer league game yesterday at Salt Lake Community College. Savovic first off bench
in summer for NuggetsThe first substitute in off the bench, Savovic played 15 minutes. He went 2-for-8 from the field, including 0-for-3 from 3-point range, and grabbed two defensive rebounds.
In three games for the Nuggets so far, Savovic has scored 15 points in 44 minutes. His best game was Saturday when he scored seven points in a 64-53 win over Utah.
Tomorrow's game between Denver and Phoenix will be shown live on ESPN2 at 8 a.m. HST.
The Nuggets finish summer league play Friday against Portland and Saturday against Memphis.
Shoji to host camp at Hawaii Prep
Hawaii women's volleyball coach Dave Shoji will lead the Big Island Volleyball Camp starting Friday at Hawaii Preparatory Academy's Castle Gymnasium in Kamuela.The camp runs through Aug. 30 and will enroll 80 Big Island players who will be instructed by Shoji and other current and former college coaches.
HPA coaches Daena Craven and Corey Morishita are the camp organizers.
Kaae victorious at Waialae
Kuulei Kaae shot a 1-over-par 73 yesterday to win the 46th annual Waialae Women's Golf Invitational at the Waialae Country Club.Kaae's round gave her a two-day total of 154 in the championship flight and the low gross score of the tournament.
She entered yesterday's play one shot behind first-round leader Tamiko Takebayashi after shooting an 81 on Monday.
Takebayashi ballooned to an 83 yesterday to finish second at 163.
Soon Young Miyamoto turned in the low net score of the event with a 134.
Jean Nagahiro won the A Flight with a total of 170. Hyun Suk Suh held on to her first-round lead to win the B Flight at 180.
Sherry Glisson shot 184 to win the C Flight and Olan Carpenter won the D Flight with a score of 190.
Wilson leads pack of Hawaii girls
WESFIELD, N.J. >> Hilo's Amanda Wilson is tied for 25th after rain suspended second-round play yesterday at the 54th U.S. Girls Junior Amateur Golf Championship at Echo Lake Country Club.Wilson carded an 80-159 to tie with five others, 18 strokes behind leader In-Bee Park (141). In a six-way tie for 30th is Honolulu's Michelle Wie (77-160), while Ayumi Hori of Honolulu shares 84th place with two others (90-173).
Forty-eight golfers will complete the second round this morning, including Honolulu's Stephanie Kono, Kira-Ann Murashige of Hilo and Makawao's Lisa Kajihara.
Golfers way back at boys amateur
DULUTH, Ga. >> Allan Baab of Wailua, Kauai, and Honolulu's Kurt Nino were well off the pace when first-round play was suspended by rain at the 55th U.S. Junior Amateur Golf Championship.Baab shot a 9-over-par 79 to share 51st place with 10 other golfers, while Nino's 13-over 83 placed him in a two-way tie for 73rd.
Jerred Texter of Pennsylvania was the early leader with a 1-under 69.
There were 75 players still on the 7,008-yard Highlands Course at Atlanta Athletic Club when play was suspended.
The first round was scheduled to resume today pending weather conditions.
Oahu team wins Buick qualifier
Paul Bunda, Stan Tandal, Larry Watanabe and Stan Hashimoto combined to fire a net 53 and win the Buick Scramble Hawaii qualifier golf tournament at the Hapuna Golf Course last Friday by four strokes.The foursome from Oahu advances to the sectional qualifier later this summer on the mainland.
Finishing in a tie for second at 57 were the teams of Greg Bartlett, Robin Ledson, Mark Phipps and Miles Sakane and Alan Clark, Jeff Martin, Tom Barrett and Bob Gray.
Base Race set for Aug. 11
Base Race, the fourth in a road race series sponsored by USO Hawaii, is scheduled for Aug. 11 at Barbers Point-Kalaeloa Point.Runners can chose either a 5-kilometer or 10-kilometer course, both starting at 7 a.m.
The 10K course is also open to teams of 5-10 persons in male, female or mixed military or civilian categories.
The registration fee is $15 by July 31 and $18 for late signups.
Late entries will be accepted.
