One-man play
Lopaka Kapanui, author of the recently produced one-man play "Pagan Tattooed Savages," will host Poets Open Mic Night tomorrow at The Haunt, Glen Grant's small bookstore/cafe at 2634 S. Maui onion gets fair treatment
Maui pays tribute to its favorite root vegetable, the sweet onion, at the Maui Onion Festival Aug. 3 and 4 at Whalers Village in Kaanapali.The event features an onion-eating contest, onion-cooking demonstrations, onion-filled foods and onion-themed games, plus entertainment that may or may not refer to onions.
Entries are being accepted through Monday for the Maui onion recipe contest for both amateur and professional cooks. The Food Network show "Follow That Food" plans to tape parts of the competition for an episode about Maui onions.

Seafood to share at fair
The featured fare at the fair this weekend is seafood. The Hawaii State Farm Fair turns its focus on locally farmed fish and shrimp with tastings and cooking demonstrations.On the plate will be shrimp from Seatech of Kauai, golden tilapia from Hawaii Fish Co. and offshore cage-raised moi from Cates International.

>> Tilapia Challenge: A blind taste test between farm-raised tilapia and mahimahi, sponsored by the state Department of Agriculture, noon to 5 p.m. Saturday.
>> Caged Moi Cooking Demo and Tasting: With chef Don Maruyama of the Waikiki Parc Hotel, 6 p.m. Saturday.
>> Kauai Shrimp Cooking Demo and Tasting: With Ernie Diaz and Bill Richards of Seatech, 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
>> Kauai Shrimp & Nalo Greens Salad Preparation and Tasting: With Dean Okimoto of Nalo Farms, 6 p.m. Sunday.
>> Caged Moi Cooking Demo and Tasting: With Glenn Chu of Indigo Eurasian Cuisine, 7:30 p.m. Sunday.
The Farm Fair is open noon to midnight Saturdays and Sundays. Admission is $3; $1.50 for children. Call 485-1770.

Summer salads: Chef David Paul Johnson hosts a free cooking demonstration, noon to 1 p.m. Saturday at Whalers Village on Maui. Featured will be summer salads -- Grilled Quail with Quail Eggs Caesar Salad, and Parfait of Marinated Chilled Fruits -- and Vinaigrette 101, a quick lesson on making basic vinaigrette for all salads. Call (808) 661-4567.Middle school benefit: The Hamakua Educational Development committee is hosting a multicultural benefit from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, to raise funds for a new middle school in Waimea. The menu will include luau favorites such as kalua pig, poke, and smoked pork and cabbage, along with Japanese chicken hekka and sushi and Filipino pancit and pork 'n' peas. Hot dogs and chili also will be served. Entertainment and children's activities are also part of the event. The food is free (funded by Sen. Lorraine Inouye's re-election campaign); donations will be collected. Call (808) 885-8344.
Maui specialty: The Island Grown Festival will showcase products unique to Maui from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Lahaina Cannery Mall. Vendors include Maui Jelly Factory, Maui Kazowie Kettlecorn, Surfing Goat Dairy, Tedeschi Vineyard, Maui Lavender Co., Maui Popcorn Factory, Sir Wilfred's coffee sampling, Waimea Salt Company and more. Festivities include an arts and crafts fair, live music and keiki hula. Call (808) 661-5304.
