Free session offered on landlord-tenant law

The Hawaii State Judiciary is sponsoring a free session on the topic "Landlord-Tenant Law" on Wednesday at noon in the Supreme Court courtroom, 417 S. King St.

Attorney Anne Anderson, who specializes in community association and landlord-tenant law, will give an overview of the landlord-tenant law to help tenants and landlords understand their rights and responsibilities.

Paralegal Jason Kanda, investigations coordinator for the Legal Aid Society of Hawaii's Fair Housing Enforcement Program, will discuss fair housing laws pertaining to the private rental market, and will include prohibited practices, protected classes and available remedies.

Motorcyclist dies after losing legs in accident

A motorcyclist died at Queen's Medical Center last night after losing both legs below the knee in an accident along the H-1 freeway, officials said.

Around 8:22 p.m., the cyclist, a 24-year-old Hickam Air Force airman, was traveling townbound on the freeway near the Hickam offramp when he lost control of his motorcycle, ambulance officials said.

The victim was found about 100 yards from his bike, just past the Radford Drive overpass.

He was taken to Queen's by ambulance in critical condition and later died.

Police closed three lanes on the H-1 freeway as they investigated the accident.

Crash On H-2 Leaves 1 Person Dead And 5 Injured

Investigators surveyed the scene of a two-vehicle accident this morning that left one person dead and one critically injured. Police said four others were hurt, and two of them were taken to Queen's Medical Center in serious condition. The accident occurred at about 3 a.m. on the onramp to the H-2 Freeway at the H-1 Freeway interchange.

Waianae fire causes $155,000 damage

A fire last night gutted a home in Waianae, leaving an estimated $155,000 damage.

The fire at 87-576 Waianae Valley Rd. was reported at 8:55 p.m. and brought under control at 9:20 p.m.

Two men and a woman escaped without injury. Three other residents, a man, a woman and their child, were not home at the time. The cause of the fire was under investigation.

2 armed men sought in Waianae robbery

Two masked men carrying rifles went into a Waianae home through an unlocked back door Saturday night, demanded money and fled with a wallet from a resident, police said.

Police said the men confronted a man and a woman in the home about 11:15 p.m.

One intruder was described as 5 feet 10, about 200 pounds, with a muscular build, curly neck-length brown hair and brown eyes.

He wore a gray handkerchief over his face, dark shorts and no shirt. The other robber was about 5 feet 10, 160 pounds and wore a mask and dark shorts, police said.

2 women in stolen car arrested in park

Police arrested two women just before 11 p.m. Saturday night after they were found with a stolen car in Lanakila District Park.

An officer was making a routine check of the park when he noticed a red Nissan parked by the restroom with the driver's side door open, police said. An underage woman in the passenger's seat had an open bottle of beer, police said.

Police seek suspect in attempted robbery

Police this morning were looking for a man who walked into a woman's Likini Street home in Aliamanu and demanded money late Saturday.

The woman was reading a book in her living room about 11 p.m. when a man went inside through the unlocked front door, police said. He demanded money, but she walked past him and escaped through the front door.

The man left empty handed.

Hilo police take 9,283 marijuana plants

Hilo police removed 9,283 marijuana plants growing in East Hawaii in a five-day eradication effort that ended Friday.

Vice officers removed plants ranging from seedlings to 8-foot-high plants.

The plants were confiscated from 609 separate plots in the Puna, Hilo, North Hilo and Hamakua districts of the Big Island, police said.
