Pooley, Irwin top field
for Turtle Bay tournament

Senior U.S. Open winner Don Pooley and defending Turtle Bay champion Hale Irwin headline the field for this year's Turtle Bay Championship.

The three-day tournament on the Arnold Palmer Course at the Turtle Bay Resorts begins Oct. 4.

Pooley, who is in his first full season on the Senior circuit, beat Tom Watson in a playoff to capture the coveted Senior U.S. Open title last month.

Irwin is certainly no stranger to Hawaii.

In addition to winning the Turtle Bay Championship last year, Irwin won the 2000 EMCKaanapali Classic as well as three Senior Skins title (the last at Wailea). He is also a one-time winner of the Hawaiian Open (1981).

Tickets are $10 per day or $20 for a three-day pass.

Miyajima wins a spot in U.S. Women's Amateur

Shayna Miyajima of Wailuku earned a berth in the 102nd U.S. Women's Amateur Championship after she shot a 1-over par 73 on Friday to win medalist honors in a sectional qualifying tournament at the Mid-Pacific Country Club.

The U.S. Women's Amateur will be held Aug. 12-17 at the Sleepy Hollow Country Club in Scarborough, N.Y.

Four alternates were also named:Joan Shimozaki of Kihei (76), Karen Quinn of Sydney (79), Lisa Kajihara of Makawao (79) and Desiree Ting (82).

Waikoloa Beach to host Big Island tournament

The 79th Big Island Amateur golf tournament will be held at the Kings' Course at the Waikoloa Beach Resort this week.

The 54-hole medal play competition begins Friday at noon. The final round is set for Sunday at 7 a.m.

Entry fee is $170. The deadline is tomorrow.
