High Country -- The Solo Seeker's Guide to a Real Life by David M. Alderman (Inner Ocean, $16.95)

Another of Inner Ocean's takes on the spiritual side of the street. Here, "dream worker" Alderman points out that while wealth and fame are fine, a life truly lived is one that comes from the "deeper levels of our inner being as we move through all the facets of our psyche." Well, OK. Books like this will either calm you down or give you agita.

Perfect Madness -- From Awakening to Enlightenment by Donna Lee Gorrell (Inner Ocean, $18.95)

Gorrell, on the other hand, seems to have actually been there and back. A Zen Buddhist, in 1972 she suddenly began to experience trances, visions and waking dreams. Was she going mad? Her mother had been a victim of schizophrenia. Gorrell struggled with the questions of fate and the nature of reality, and came to terms with her condition by deciding she was actually awakening after a lifetime of spiritual somnulence. An interesting and harrowing journey. Like the volume above, these Inner Ocean books are very attractively put together.
