Cultural exchange through clay

Ceramicists from around the globe are producing their art alongside one another -- and promoting intercultural understanding -- at the "East-West Ceramics Collaboration III," sponsored by the University of Hawaii-Manoa's Department of Art.

The event, which runs through Aug. 9, features slide presentations by the visiting artists, a symposium and an open house. All events are free.

A calendar follows:

>> "Ceramics Futures": 2 p.m. today, UH Art Auditorium (room 132). The symposium with ceramics experts Paul Greenhalgh, Jo Lauria and Paul Mathieu questions future developments in ceramics via slide presentations. Discussion follows.

Greenhalgh, president of the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, is an international lecturer and former Head of Research at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

Lauria is an independent curator and museum consultant who specializes in 20th and 21st century decorative arts.
