1969: Political chatter mistaken
for alcoholics’ meeting

A GROUP of 6th Senatorial District Democrats were meeting at Linekona School last week, and City Council Chairman Walter Heen was speaking. A man walked in and sat in the back row. Finally he interrupted Heen's political speech and asked, "Is this a meeting of A.A.?" Heen swallowed and said it wasn't. The man then left and found his group across the street. As Heen resumed, he quipped, "That's a pretty hard act to follow." (July 23, 1969) ...

THE American Cancer Society is getting hip: It is holding a benefit golf tourney at Makaha over a weekend in September, a package deal that includes a room for two, buffet dinner and dancing. The invite P.S. says, "If your wife or girlfriend likes to play golf, there will be a women's tournament running simultaneously on the east course." Suggested slogan: Swing at Makaha and benefit the Cancer Society! (July 28, 1970) ...

YOU can bet Jim MacArthur will be glued to a TV set Aug. 2 -- that's the night his mother, Helen Hayes, will be featured in a 90-minute program on Channel 11 in which she'll re-create some of her most famous roles and talk about past, present and future American theater. (July 23, 1973) ... John McDermott of Fawcett-McDermott is beginning his 25th year in the advertising game, and to celebrate yesterday he donned an ascot, drove his spanking-old Rolls-Royce into the porte-cochere of the Royal Hawaiian and hosted a luncheon in the Director's Room for eight clients, each of whom has been with him for more than 20 years. (July 23, 1974) ...

THE big number in the musical "Man of La Mancha" is "The Impossible Dream." The impossible dream at the La Mancha restaurant must be the thought of anyone ordering "Salad Bar Only," as it's listed on the menu. You can buy sandwiches that include the salad bar priced from $2.50 to $2.95, and complete luncheons including salad bar and beverage priced from $3.25 to $3.95. But to order salad bar only, the tariff is $3.50. (July 28, 1976) ...

WHEN vacationing singer Engelbert Humperdinck dropped into Trappers with pal Dick Jensen, it caused quite a commotion. Best line of the night came from Hyatt Regency sales manager Manny Fernandes, who eyed the singer and asked Jimmy Borges, "Isn't that Rodney Arias?" Well, there IS a resemblance. (July 23, 1978) ... Several localites will find their pictures on display at Greenbriar, W.Va., next week. Among those whose smiling faces will be on view are Gov. George Ariyoshi, Judi Anderson, Andy Bumatai, Lowell Dillingham, Donna Hartley, Al Harrington, Carmen Hedlund and Henry Walker. Why, you're asking? Because the "Smiling Dentist," Dr. Robert Gibson, will be there to make a presentation to the American Academy of Esthetics, and he uses photos of the above people to make his case about "Smilepower." (July 22, 1980) ...

TAKING off today after a lengthy relaxer at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel is actress Audrey Hepburn. She was accompanied by her two sons (from Mel Ferrer) and Rob Wolders, widower of Merle Oberon. For a time there was a tricky situation at the Mauna Kea because Julie Andrews, fresh from her role in "S.O.B.," was vacationing there at the same time as Hepburn. You may recall that Andrews, who starred in "My Fair Lady" on Broadway, was denied the opportunity to repeat the role of Eliza in the movie because Jack Warner wanted Hepburn for the role, even if her singing voice had to be dubbed, which it was. In the ensuing years, however, Andrews has had the last laugh. (July 24, 1981) ...

LOOK at a packet of Royal Kona Freeze Dried Blend Coffee and you'll see on the back that it's "Imported by Mauna Kea Coffee Co., Captain Cook, Kona, Hawaii." But as George D. Curtis asks, "Wonder where they import it from?" (July 22, 1986) ... Lee Trevino, who turns 50 on Dec. 1, will make his first appearance on the senior PGA golf tour at the GTE Kaanapali Classic Dec. 7 to 9. (July 24, 1989) ...
