PR’s stars get
laurels to rest on

The stars of PR were out last night as the Public Relations Society of America-Hawaii chapter awarded its own for stellar work during 2001.

The public relations professionals were honored with a "best of show" award, plus seven Koa Anvil awards, 16 Koa Hammer awards and nine awards of excellence. Three individuals were also honored for professional achievement.

The Koa Anvil is the top award presented by the organization while Koa Hammers are awarded for outstanding public relations "tools" such as news releases, media kits, brochures, newsletters, speeches and Web sites.

The best of show award was presented to Russell Pang, newly promoted vice president for corporate communications at Communications-Pacific Inc.

His Anvil-winning "Macy's Launches New Era of Retailing in Hawaii" was lauded over the other six; he also won a "Hammer" for "Partners in the Neighborhood, Chevron Hawaii Community Newsletter."

CommPac Senior Vice President Allison Russell was a multiple winner as was the company's CP Interactive division. The company won nearly a third of the awards presented last night at Hilton Hawaiian Village, following judging by the Southern Arizona PRSA chapter.

"We value the opinions of our peers in the industry very, very highly and it's always nice to have them say 'you guys did a good job,'" said CEO Kitty Lagareta.

Other multiple winners were McNeil Wilson Communications with five awards; Olomana Marketing principal Alan Tang and St. Francis Healthcare Systems of Hawaii each won three; The Limtiaco Co. and Current Events principal Ross Wilson Jr. won two awards each.

Sharon Weiner, DFS Hawaii group vice president and chair emerita of Stryker Weiner & Yokota Public Relations was inducted as the tenth member of the PRSA-Hawaii Hall of Fame; Stafford Kiguchi, senior vice president and corporate communications manager at Bank of Hawaii, was named "Gregg W. Perry Public Relations Professional of the Year"; and Amy Hennessey, senior account executive at McNeil Wilson Communications, won the Hokupaa Award, honoring a relative newcomer in the profession.
