Hungry for Hawaiian?

Kaumakapili Church, 766 N. King St.. will be selling $15 bambucha luau plates, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. The plates include kalua pig, chicken long rice, raw fish, poi, lomilomi salmon, opihi, sweet potato, haupia and other goodies. The church has been hosting the fund-raising event for 31 years. Float builders needed

Aloha Festivals is seeking volunteers to build floats for the 55th annual floral parade, scheduled for Sept. 14.

Training will be provided by longtime volunteers. The work will be performed from Aug. 1 to Sept. 14 at Pier 32.

Volunteers should have good people skills. In return for your creative genius, you will receive an Aloha Festivals T-shirt and an invitation to the annual Mahalo Party. Call 589-1771.

Arts guides sought

The Honolulu Academy of Arts Education Department is seeking interpretive guides for Shangri-La, the Kahala estate of the late heiress Doris Duke.

In her will, Duke specified that Shangri-La become a foundation for the study and understanding of Middle Eastern art and culture, accessible to scholars and the public.

Guides will greet visitors, lead tours and tell visitors about Duke and her interest in the art, architecture and culture of the Islamic world.

The training course will be held Wednesdays, Aug. 7 to Oct. 9, at the academy and Shangri-La. Tours will be offered Wednesdays to Saturdays beginning Nov. 6. Guides will be paid $25 per tour.

Become nature-smart

Don't be one of those who goes hiking and has to rely on helicopter rescue teams to get out. The Hawaii Department of Land & Natural Resources' hunter education classes offer outdoor strategies for those 10 and older who enjoy hiking, camping or hunting.

Topics include survival and first aid, wildlife identification and conservation, rules and regulations, outdoor responsibility and firearm and archery safety.

The next sessions are 5:45 to 10:15 p.m. Aug. 9 and 7:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 10 at Nimitz Business Center. Both sessions are required for certification.

To sign up, call 587-0200. All students will be required to show a photo ID at the door.

Other sessions are at the same times Aug. 23 and 24, Sept. 13 and 14, and Sept. 20 and 21.
