COURTESY PHOTO In a genre propelled by hordes of faceless, anonymous deejays, U.K. recording artist, producer and actor Goldie is one of electronica's few genuine celebrities. British musician
puts spin on local
promoter's partyBy Shawn "Speedy" Lopes
slopes@starbulletin.comThrough a variety of aliases -- Ajax Project, Rufige Kru, Metalheadz, etc. -- Goldie has earned a reputation as a true innovator in the genre. In the early '90s he was among the first acts to define the drum 'n' bass sound by blending darker elements of breakbeat into a sophisticated melange, raising the bar for the idiom and creating what many considered Britain's new urban blues.
In 1993 he became the first drum 'n' bass artist signed to a major label. If his gold-toothed visage looks familiar, it may be due to supporting roles in such high-profile movies as "Snatch" and the last James Bond flick, "The World Is Not Enough."
Local promoter G-Spot of Double-O-Spot Productions celebrates his seventh anniversary tonight at Wave Waikiki with a special appearance by Goldie, along with fellow Englishmen MC Rage and Doc Scott, plus "Chicago's Godfather of Ghetto Booty" DJ Funk.
Other friends and people who have been significant to the 00-Spot sound over the years, including KSM, Taharba (Sovergn T), Daniel J, Scotty Soul, IKON, Mizota, Kavet the Catalyst and Space Cowboy, will help keep the party going.
