Asian foods and wine

Explore the way wine pairs with Asian foods at "Chopsticks and Wine," 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. July 29 at the Bishop Museum.

Featured chefs are Darryl Fujita of the Halekulani, Hiroshi Fukui of L'Uraku, Shigeaki Inoue of Kyo-Ya, Göran Streng of the Hawaii Prince Hotel and Troy Teruya of Catch of the Day Sushi. Their dishes will be featured alongside wines from Australia, California and Washington.

Experiment with finding the ideal wine to match, for example, Streng's shrimp tempura or Shigeaki's katsuo tataki. If you need guidance, a seminar, "Wine 101," will be offered.

Cost is $70, to benefit the Honolulu Japanese Chamber of Commerce. Call 949-5531.

Savoring the North Shore

A food-appreciation group that takes its eating slow will head for the North Shore next month for a "Low Country Boil."

Featured will be foods from growers on Oahu's north side, including Kahuku shrimp, corn and yellow watermelon; Waialua tomatoes, sweet onions, herbs, asparagus and cucumber; and Pupukea greens.

The Hawaii Slow Foods Convivium is sponsoring the event, 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Aug. 4 at North Shore Farms. Jeanne and Steven Vana will host a tour of their farm, and participants will be able to pick their own produce for carrying home.

Cost is $15 for members; $20 for nonmembers. Reservations are required; call 947-6404.

The Slow Foods Convivium was organized earlier this year to promote an appreciation of good food, in all aspects, from farm to table. For information call Nan Piianaia on the Big Island, 808-885-6085.
