The following is a preview of movies opening this week:

Tomorrow

"Eight Legged Freaks": "Independence Day" and "Godzilla" producers Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich are back with SUV-size, poisonous, man-eating mutant spiders! Taking a cue from B-grade monster movies of the late '50s to early '60s, a chemical spill in a rural mining town causes hundreds of spiders to mutate overnight. David Arquette, Scarlett Johansson and Kari Wuhrer are the humans who take on the critters. (PG-13)

Friday

"K-19: The Widowmaker": This action/thriller is based on a 1961 event when the then-Soviet Union's first nuclear ballistic submarine suffered a reactor malfunction during a sea trial in the North Atlantic. A meltdown could have lead to a nuclear war during the height of the Cold War. Kathryn Bigelow ("Strange Days") directs, with Harrison Ford taking the role of the sub's captain who must choose between his orders from the Kremlin and the lives of his men. Liam Neeson plays the captain's executive officer. (R)

"Stuart Little 2": The sequel to the 1999 hit reunites the original cast -- Geena Davis, Hugh Laurie, Jonathan Lipnicki and the voices of Michael J. Fox and Nathan Lane -- for further adventures of the endearing and plucky little mouse. This time, Stuart gets a new human sister, learns to fly an airplane (a model one, natch) and befriends a sexy pigeon named Margalo (voiced by Melanie Griffith). (PG)
