A man was killed early this morning after the car he was driving apparently collided with a city express bus in Nanakuli, firefighters at the scene said today.

The accident, which occurred on Farrington Highway near Haleakala Avenue shortly after 4 a.m., caused closure of three lanes of Farrington Highway this morning.

The bus was traveling toward Waianae when it apparently collided with the car, firefighters said.

Details of the accident were not available as police remained at the scene investigating the accident.

Witnesses said the car was demolished. It was not known if the bus carried any passengers and, if so, whether they were injured.

For several hours, only one lane on Farrington Highway in the area was open to morning traffic. At least one Waianae commuter said a short drive, which normally takes her 10 minutes to get to work at Nanakuli Super, took more than an hour early this morning.

Enrica Tingcang, a cashier at Nanakuli Super, said traffic going to Nanakuli from Waianae was "backed up past Maile Point. It was really long."

However, by mid-morning she said the traffic congestion had eased up.
