Wong, Metzger upset
Brazilian duo in Canada

Punahou products Kevin Wong and Stein Metzger did their part to slow Brazil's recent dominance of the Federation of International Volleyball World Tour yesterday.

Metzger and Wong surprised Brazil's Emanuel Rego and Tande Ramos 25-23, 21-15 to advance to the semifinals of the Canadian at Montreal.

Rego and Ramos were the top-ranked team last year and were coming off a championship in their last tournament.

Metzger and Wong reached the quarterfinals by outlasting fellow Americans Dax Holdren and Eric Fonoimoana 15-21, 24-22, 15-10 in 63 minutes.

Metzger and Wong will take on the Brazilian team of Ricardo Santos and Jose Loiola, ranked seventh in the world. Metzger and Wong are ranked No. 14.

Todd Rogers and Sean Scott (another Punahou alum) finished ninth after losing in the opening round.

Walsh-May keep rolling: Americans Kerri Walsh and Misty May won another gold medal, beating Brazil's Adriana Behar and Shelda.

May and Walsh won 21-18, 25-23 in 46 minutes to win the $22,500 first prize. They are 25-3 together this year and have won five titles together.

Americans still winless: At Chengdu, China, Former Hawaii middle blocker Heather Bown scored six points but could not keep China from beating the U.S. 25-19, 25-17, 25-17 at the FIVB World Grand Prix yesterday.

Ruirui Zhao helped China move to 2-0 with 14 points and six blocks. The U.S. fell to 0-2 and plays Cuba today.

Bartels loses out in Mr. Price Pro final

Sophia Mulanovich of Peru clinched the Mr. Price Pro title at Durban's North Beach, South Africa yesterday.

Mulanovich beat Jacqueline Silva of Brazil, Trudy Todd of Australia and Hawaii's Melanie Bartels in the final to win her first World Qualifying Series (WQS) event.

Mulanovich pocketed $3,500 in prize money and now leads the ASP WQS ratings. Bartels entered the competition unranked and won $1,300 for her effort.

The Mr. Price Pro is a six-star rated Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Qualifying Series (WQS) event for men and a four-star women's event.

Fink, Martin highlight QB Club Agenda

John Fink, president and general manager of television stations KHNL and KFVE, will be the featured speaker at tomorrow's meeting of the Honolulu Quarterback Club.

Fink will discuss his station's new sports broadcast contract with the University of Hawaii.

Ralph Martin, president of USA Boxing-Hawaii, will talk about the status of youth boxing in the islands.

Debra Wicks and Vicki Cozy, defensive co-captains of the Pacific Blast women's professional football team, are also on the program.

The luncheon begins at 11:30 a.m. at the Pagoda Restaurant in Honolulu; program begins promptly at noon.
