1969: Masako and hubby in
town to work with Del Webb

FORMER isle entertainer Masako (Darlene Yoshimoto) is in town with her husband, Las Vegas hotel exec Herb McDonald. They're involved with Del Webb's Hawaiian expansion plans. (July 15, 1969) ... Circus promoter Ralph Yempuku is showing his usual largess by giving blocks of tickets to Waimano Home, Tripler Hospital and other deserving groups. The HIC-based circus promises to be a dandy, and will be ever so much more comfortable than the old tent shows they had when we were kids. The action commences Thursday and runs through July 27. Every kid should see it. (July 15, 1969) ...

CITY Councilman Frank Loo was recently representing the city at a meeting of a Filipino group, Pasuquinios of Oahu, at the Flamingo. A lady sitting next to the well-tanned Loo (who was wearing a barong) couldn't resist asking, "You Ilocano?" Loo recounted the tale to fellow Councilman Toraki Matsumoto, who replied, "You actually look more Visayan." P.S. Loo is Chinese. (July 15, 1971) ...

MICHEL'S GM Hans Strasser back from a lengthy European jaunt, so where did he eat his first meal back on American soil? At Peter Birnbaum's German restaurant, Beethoven's Fifth, of course. (July 17, 1973) ...

IF you like Keola & Kapono, you'll probably LOVE the entire Beamer family. That's who'll be entertaining July 27 at the HIC Concert Hall -- Keola & Kapono, plus mama Winona Beamer, Uncle C. Keola Beamer and four cousins including Mahi & Sunbeam Beamer. That's one concert everyone has to come away from Beamering. (July 16, 1974) ...

COMPOSER Bob Magoon is generally conceded to be painfully shy, but he's promised to open up a week from tonight (July 21) at Kapiolani Bandstand when a free concert saluting him, "The Music of Eaton 'Bob' Magoon," will be presented. He'll be doing a hula to his song "Christianity," and will sing his first hit song, "Coconut Willie," written many years ago with Jack deMello. (July 14, 1977) ...

SHE won't even arrive here for a week, but already Connie Haines is lining up places to sing. Besides a week of guesting at Trappers Aug. 6, Haines will also appear with John Norris and the New Orleans Jazz Band at the Garden Bar of the Hilton Hawaiian Village, and with her ex-husband, Del Courtney, at the Halekulani. She'll be here until she has to leave for Disneyland where she opens Aug. 17 with Jane Russell, Beryl Davis and Rhonda Fleming. (July 20, 1984) ...

A FIRST for Fast Eddie's, the Kailua disco. Eddie Broome has installed a metal detector which customers will have to pass though just like they do at airports. Shades of the Old West and "Leave your hardware at the door." A press release says the security measure was taken "Due to the world conditions regarding terrorists and their actions toward Americans, plus our proximity to the KMCAS Base." I didn't know things were that fast at Eddie's! (July 7, 1986) ...

YES, that was Tom Hanks, taking time out from North Shore filming of "Joe vs. the Volcano," dining Sunday night at Jameson's by the Sea ... And among those in the audience of "13 Daughters" Sunday night at the Hawaii Theatre was tobacco heiress Doris Duke. (July 18, 1989) ...

WHEN magician Mike Ching was in Las Vegas recently, he stopped by the California Hotel -- a popular hostelry with isle visitors -- because he was told he could get real saimin there. Ken Alford and his Dixieland band provided music for the Pacific Club's 140th-anniversary party Friday night, but he dispelled the notion that he'd also performed at the grand opening of the venerable club. (July 15, 1991) ...
