Skipper and crew rescued at Pacific CupThe skipper and three-person crew of a disabled yacht in the West Marine Pacific Cup race from San Francisco to Kaneohe were rescued yesterday by a cargo vessel.
The Mimos was left drifting toward the California coast, some 300 miles away, race officials said.
The 41-foot sloop lost its rudder, and skipper Nicolas Winssinger was unable to count on reliable steering from an auxiliary rudder, they said.
The Coast Guard was contacted, and the cargo vessel Rickmers Hamburg, which was headed to Long Beach, Calif., was diverted to make the rescue.
Meanwhile, Wildfire continued to lead the fleet while the staggered start concluded with the biggest and fastest yachts leaving San Francisco.
