Musashimaru
chasing front-runners

NAGOYA, Japan (AP) -- Ozeki Chiyotaikai stayed undefeated to retain the lead along with Mongolian Asashoryu and lower-ranked Takanonami on Friday, the sixth day of the 15-day Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament in central Japan.

Chasing the front-runners were three wrestlers with only one loss each - Yokozuna Musashimaru and No. 14 maegashira Buyuzan and No. 10 maegashira Tochisakae.

In the day's premier bout at the Aichi Prefectural Gymnasium, Chiyotaikai extended his winning streak to six after slipping free of No. 4 maegashira Takanowaka's grip and sending him out. Takanowaka worsened to 3-3.

Sekiwake Asashoryu, or Dolgorsvren Dagvadrj, edged closer to promotion with his sixth win over No. 2 maegashira Takamisakari (1-5). Asashoryu, who forced out Takamisakari with a series of hand thrusts to the throat, needs at least four more victories to secure consideration for ozeki, sumo's second-highest rank.

No. 7 maegashira Takanonami tossed out No. 5 maegashira Aminishiki to stay undefeated. Aminishiki is 2-4.

Musashimaru got the better of No. 1 maegashira Kotonowaka in a shoving match at the center of the ring, improving to 5-1.

In other major bouts, komusubi Miyabiyama drove out No. 3 maegashira Kyokushuzan, or Mongolian Batbayar Davaa, to pick up his second victory. Kyokushuzan is 1-5.

No. 8 maegashira Kyokutenho, or Mongolian Tsevegnyam Nyamjav, threw down No. 6 maegashira Kotomitsuki, leaving both wrestlers at 4-2.

In the 26-member juryo division, No. 8-ranked Toyozakura pushed out No. 12-ranked Kasugaoh, or Kim Son-tek from South Korea. Toyozakura went 3-3, while Kasugaoh dropped to 1-5.

Among the makushita junior wrestlers, No. 4-ranked Kinkaiyama steamrolled No. 11-ranked Asasekiryu, or Mongolian Badaarch Dashunyam, for his third win. Asasekiryu is 2-4. Junior wrestlers have only eight bouts during the tournament.
