Feelin’ groovy, not
grumpy, and sweet, too

START YOUR WEEKEND early tonight and check out a party that could soon challenge the Ocean Club's supremacy on Thursdays. Starting at 10 p.m., the Stone Groove Family is bringing back "Sweetness" for the 21-and-over crowd just around the corner at Grumpy's.

Earlier this week, SGF's G-Dog predicted that the new event would "bring it full circle" for the DJ collective. Much like the original version that rocked Cafe Mardi Gras in '98, "Sweetness" is going for a mellow, house-party-in-a-bar vibe at Grumpy's. Those who decide to go are promised some "intelligent jammy jams" and "no stupid music," according to G-Dog. Also, ladies get in free before midnight ...

You know, I'm really enjoying the new version of "Hot Hawaiian Nights" that airs on KFVE every Friday at 7 p.m. It's a half-hour live concert broadcast from different restaurants at Aloha Tower Marketplace. This week Three Plus performs for the television cameras onstage at Kapono's ...

Does watching Hawaii's best DJs compete on Saturday at the Wave for a chance at the 2002 Technics World DJ Championships sound boring to you? A block party going on downtown the same night might be more your speed. Ten bucks gets you into "Wok On!," a block party on the ground level of 1154 Fort Street Mall and inside the ARTS at Marks Garage (1159 Nuuanu Ave.), Club Pauahi (80 S. Pauahi St.), the Club House (10 N. Hotel St.) and Garden of Saigon (1041 Nuuanu Ave.).

Among the artists performing Saturday: Hellbound Hounds, Eastside Wrecking Crew, Flower Pit Live and DJs Independent, Pressure, Maggie the Cat, Jon, Lion, Epic and Shawn Murphy. In what's becoming more common at parties lately, there will also be local art on display at "Wok On." Star-Bulletin photographer Richard Walker will join Roy Venters, Kenneth Brimer, Lanakila Kelliher and Mystery Cat in presenting art work at the event ...

Ever tried frozen custard? Me neither. But Ed Wary and Jim Hamachek, business partners who opened Eddie's Burgers & Frozen Custard in Kaimuki yesterday, are sure you've tasted nothing like it. Adding egg yolk to the mix, according to Wary, "takes ice cream up a notch." Third-pound Parker Ranch Black Agnus beef burgers, homemade french fries and old-fashioned onion rings are also on the menu. Stop by 3607 Waialae Ave. or call 739-0033 for more ...
