Hawaii
For a lucky few,
flashbacks do occurWHEN local artist Jan Kasprzycki was attending a show of his works at the Durka Chung Gallery in San Francisco, a woman walked in the door and suddenly the artist was transported back in time to "American Graffiti" and the youthful Beach Boys "Surfin' U.S.A." It was Mary Lanham, who attended San Gabriel High School at the same time as Kasprzycki. "We both went to Mrs. Callish's Dance Studio," recalled Kasprzycki with a smile. "I so clearly remember dancing with Mary. She wore a pink angora sweater and a dark gray flannel skirt." It was four and a half decades, but it was such a kick to meet again in 2002 ...
IT was also a trip back in time for Waikiki hotel security guard Tim Haverly. He got a call at work from his excited wife, Lei, who fairly screamed, "Honey, I just won a trip to Hollywood - airfare, three nights at the Hilton Universal City and a free concert." Suddenly it was Abbott & Costello time! "Great," said Tim, "Who are we going to see?" Lei: "Yes." "Yeah, great," said Tim, "Who are we going to see. "Yes." "Let's start over, said the befuddled Tim, "Who is performing?" "Yes," replied Lei. "Don't start that again," replied Tim, who eventually learned the two had won a 107.9 contest to see The Who at Hollywood Bowl. The concert had been canceled when bassist John Entwhistle died, but then staged as a tribute. They had great seats, reports Haverly, but "nobody ever sat down again after the first chord." He concludes, "Best time we've had in years ...
A Raspberry for Eric
WHEN I saw the "Return to Abbey Road" all-star show at the Maui Cultural Center Amphitheater a few weeks ago, Eric Carmen of the Raspberries never returned after his solo number, even for the big finale. Combination of booze and stage fright, one backstage worker reported. He did show up the next night when the group played to a huge house at the Blaisdell Arena, but Honolulans got to see him with his contemporaries for the last time. He left the tour after that show. A pity, too, because he was a real talent ...LIKE mother, like daughter. Kristi Inkinen, daughter of Kathy Inkinen of Inkinen & Associates, has now followed in her mother's footsteps, if not her shadow. Kristi is now running Remedy Intelligent Staffing in Kaimuki, but is quick to point out that she doesn't feel she's competing with her mother since Remedy recruits for entry to mid-level management positions, while her mother deals strictly with executives ...
High-priced Rainbow
THINGS often sparkle at Karla Brom's Rainbow Collection, but never more than when she showcased the John Buechner collection. There were such rare pieces as a .34-carat intense yellow diamond ring, worth a mere $1.2 million, a 1.64 carat intense bluish-green ring -- extremely rare -- with two purple-pink, pear-shaped diamond with a weight of .66 carats worth $1,100,000. Also a 4.05 carat orange-pink heart-shaped diamond in a necklace accented with white and pink diamonds worth $900,000. A lot of curious folks stopped by to gander, but some serious buyers requested private showings ...
