Former Damien coach
dead at 62 from cancer

Jack Koury, 62, a longtime coach and teacher at Damien Memorial High School, died last week in Pennsylvania of cancer.

"We in the Damien community are all shocked," Monarchs athletics director Herb Lloyd said. "He had undergone bladder surgery recently and we thought he would be OK."

Koury was the Damien head football coach from 1974 to 1977. He was the winning coach in the first high school game played at Aloha Stadium, when Damien beat Iolani 28-15 on Sept. 19, 1975.

"I called Jack 'The Rock' long before there was a WWF," said former coaching and teaching colleague Chip Davey. "He was so solid and stable, always there when you needed a friend."

Koury taught history and government at Damien for 31 years. He was most recently the school's head track and field coach last spring before a series of surgeries sidelined him in May.

Koury was in Pennsylvania for a reunion of his Kutztown State football team.

"He was a tenacious two-way lineman, the classic '60s player," said teammate and best friend Bill Wiggins. "He played four years and we depended on him every down."

Koury was an avid reader and student of history. The chairman of Damien's social studies department "inspired generations of students, including Damien alumni who returned to teach at the school," Davey said.

Davey said services have not yet been set, but there will be a memorial dinner here. Half of Koury's ashes will be scattered in Kailua and half in Pennsylvania, where he is survived by family members.

Bartels still alive in surfing meet

DURBAN, South Africa >> Hawaii's Melanie Bartels advanced through the second round of the Mr. Price Pro World Qualifying Series surfing event yesterday.

Bartels was the only female surfer to make it into the third round, after competition was halted because onshore wind and low tide made the break unsurfable.
