Flight- and fight-ready
A class in self-defense tactics for airline personnel will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Wednesday at the HCC/UND Aerospace, at 140 Iako Place off old Lagoon Drive.The class will be taught by martial arts instructor and international competitor Mike Young, who is also a staff writer for Karate Magazine, and L.A. County Deputy Sheriff Martial Arts Director; and Dr. Wes Young, FAA Sr. Aviation Medical Examiner, civilian and military flight surgeon, emergency physician and FBI consultant.
Participants must qualify to enroll in this course, with applicants approved on a "need-to-know" basis. The class is open to actively employed flight crew meeting criteria below:
>> Possess and show a valid AOA badge and 2nd picture I.D. at the door.
>> Current airline crewmembers will have first preference.
>> Sign a nondisclosure agreement and liability release before class.
>> Flight Attendants pay $49.95; Pilots pay $99.95. Write checks to Westcom.
>> Wear loose fitting clothes and athletic shoes with a minimum of jewelry.

Korean writing sought
In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the arrival of Koreans in Hawaii, Bamboo Ridge Press is seeking submissions for a special issue featuring the writing of Korean-Americans born, raised or living in Hawaii.Guest editors for the issue are Nora Okja Keller, Brenda Kwon, Sun Nam Kung, Gary Pak and Cathy Song.
Send up to seven poems, up to three prose pieces including short stories, essays, excerpts from plays, novels or memoirs, with a 15-page maximum. Editors will also consider historical writings dating to 1903.

Best in local design
There were three winners for the Manufacturer of the Year at the 16th annual Governor's Fashion Awards.Reyn Spooner was awarded in the traditional category, Iolani/Young Hawaii in contemporary, and in unique/lifestyle, Leighton Lam Designs.
Criteria for these awards included demonstrating innovation and leadership in design, making contributions to the community and fashion industry (specifically in employment, programs and promotions) and demonstrating success as a manufacturer through exporting and/or expansion.
The Specialty Retailer of the Year Award was awarded to Martin & MacArthur and the General Retailer of the Year Award went to Sears. Criteria for these awards included contributing to the retail industry and community, demonstrating support for Hawaii's fashion/lifestyle manufacturers and success in retail.
Ruth Kerr, former sales representative for Robert Kaufman Company, a fabric converter, received the Ka Ahu No'eau Lifetime Achievement Award for 2002. And Linda Foley, owner and operator of Island Bias Quilting, received the Power of Yes Award for Outstanding Achievement offered by event sponsor First Hawaiian Bank.
The ceremony took place June 28.
