FAA issues small plane
security advisory

Aircraft owners are told to
exercise caution against terrorism

The Federal Aviation Administration is advising owners of small aircraft to secure their planes to prevent possible use by terrorists.

FAA Pacific representative Tweet Coleman said an advisory was issued Tuesday to the members of the General Aviation Council of Hawaii, "To make sure that they lock the controls on the inside of the airplanes and also to lock the outside."

Owners who take other security measures are being asked to continue to do so.

"Some would chain their airplane to the parking spot. And some would lock a chain around a prop or one of the struts," Coleman said.

She said the same advisory was issued in February.

On Oahu, the only vehicular access to the Honolulu Airport's General Aviation field is through Lagoon Drive. Since Sept. 11, state deputy sheriffs have been stopping traffic just past the Kalewa Street intersection and making security checks.
