Blood donors will get
a patriotic pin

Star-Bulletin staff

Blood donors who make a donation by July 16 will receive a red, white and blue Hawaii Blood Donor lapel pin.

"As we celebrate Independence Day, we honor those who give the gift of life, many of whom consider blood donation an important civic responsibility," said Blood Bank of Hawaii President Robyn Yim.

Each donation is separated into red blood cells, platelets and plasma, so one donation can help up to three people.

Donors are especially needed during the summer months when schools are out and people are on vacation, Yim said.

The donation process takes about an hour, which includes some paperwork, a confidential interview and a miniature physical. The actual blood collection takes only five to eight minutes.

Donors must be at least 18, in good health and at least 110 pounds. A valid photo ID is required.
