Broker turns Kahala red,
white and blue

KAHALA looked like the most patriotic place in America yesterday, as broker Shelly Campbell followed a tradition she began four years ago, and with help from her family, including some from the mainland celebrating the Fourth of July in Hawaii, put out 1,000 American flags in her neighborhood ... Supermarket junkies might want to glance at the National Enquirer to read their take on the World.com debacle. A photog on assignment to the Enquirer was nosing around the Grand Wailea Maui the other day. That's where World.com had booked over 300 rooms for key employees. One reason for the paper's interest might be that Scott Sullivan, former CFO of World.com, lives in Boca Raton, Fla., about a nine-iron shot from the Enquirer's office ...

Spam and yeggs

WHEN Barbara Pleadwell of the PR firm Hastings & Pleadwell sent out an email calendar press release about the Aug. 9 "Taste of California" weekend hosted by Kristi Yamaguchi, Roy Yamaguchi and Alan Wong, preceded the night before by a concert featuring the group Hiroshima, she got a reaction she wasn't anticipating. She'd listed on the subject line, "Hiroshima," and many media inquired if this was a legitimate release or perhaps a virus infected spam. She quickly explained the release was legitimate. Incidentally, both the Aug. 9 Hiroshima concert and the Aug. 10 taste-fest will benefit Hawaii Centers for Independent Living ...

On the eve of his last day of filming in Hawaii, Bruce Willis stopped by Planet Hollywood to thank them for catering cast and crew on location throughout the shoot and the parties he hosted at his Island home. Big surprise: Willis was a founder and big stockholder in the Planet world ... Headline: "Aiona knocks off Tanonaka." No, it's not a prediction of the upcoming lieutenant governor's race between Duke Aiona and Dalton Tanonaka. It refers to Aiona's "Salmon a la Duke" besting Tanonaka's chicken dish at the Taste of Honolulu's candidate cook-off ...

Braving the Snow

IT was a high point in David Snow's radio career when he did a live interview with Arnold Schwarzenegger on his "Dr. Health Radio" show on KHVH last Saturday morning. Arnold, who's one of the nicest showbiz guys I've met, was dashing from an all-night shoot for his upcoming film, "Terminator 3," but characteristically took the time to chat with Snow about bodybuilding and the Mr. Hawaiian Isles contest he emcees ... Radio man Jeff Kino didn't recognize the 90ish gent being wheeled into his doctor's office the other day, but admired his ring. The man was bandleader Del Courtney and the diamond ring was presented to him by Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis after Super Bowl XI. Despite the wheelchair, the venerable Courtney is getting ready for his monthly big band concert at the Blue Tropix on Sunday ...

HOW do they keep the grass so green at Bishop Museum? The Brothers Cazimero will be featured at next Thursday's "Moonlight Mele on the Lawn." Other recent lawn performers were Amy Hanaili'i Gilliom and Ernie Cruz Jr. And on Sunday, the lawn will be graced by Bruddah Sam and Vaihi for Museum Family Sunday ...
