Taylor immediate hit
for Hawaiian Islanders

Nian Taylor of the Hawaiian Islanders was named the Ford Tough National Player of the Week yesterday.

Taylor contributed in many ways in the Islanders' 49-35 upset victory over the Bakersfield Blitz.

The former Washington State receiver caught five passes for 77 yards and three touchdowns against the Blitz. He set up another touchdown with a 48-yard return of a missed field goal.

The 6-foot-3, 215-pound Taylor, who played eight games this season with the Richmond Speed, also intercepted a pass and forced a fumble on defense to stop two Blitz drives.

Taylor will suit up for his third game in an Islanders uniform on July 12 at Arkansas.

Taylor is the second Islanders player to receive the Ford Tough national recognition. Sae Paogofie won the award for his play in the Islanders' season-opening win over Fresno.
