Fireworks On The 4th

"4th of July Spectacular": Sills Field, Schofield Barracks, 438-4480. Food, game and craft booths; 5k fun run; pony rides; and performances by Hot Salsa Dancing Hawaii, Tino & The Rhythm Klub and the Society of Seven-Las Vegas. Event runs from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., with fireworks from 8:15 to 8:45 p.m.

"Celebrate America -- Kailua Style": Kailua Beach Park, 261-2727. A parade starts at 10 a.m., moving down Kainalu Drive, leading to "Food on the Fourth" from noon to 6 p.m. at the Lanikai end of Kailua Beach Park. An air show featuring Clint Churchill and Hank Buckner begins at 5:30 p.m. Fireworks at 8 p.m.

Ala Moana Fireworks Show: Ala Moana Center, 955-9517. 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday. Concert and festivities from 6 to 9 p.m. featuring Na Leo, Andy Bumatai and the City of Refuge Choral Group. Hawaiian 105 KINE's Brickwood Galuteria and Frank B. Shaner host the pre-fireworks show. Fireworks light the sky from 8:30 to 8:50 p.m. Free.

Celebrate Good Times

4th of July Rooftop Party: Tomorrow at Ryan's Grill, Ward Centre. Bring your beach chairs and purchase food and drinks from booths between 5 and 10 p.m. Reserved seating available; call 591-9132.

Fourth of July "Picnic in the Park": The fourth annual city-sponsored event in Waikiki's Kapiolani Park tomorrow will feature entertainment, free games and snacks at the bandstand. Bring a seat or mat to sit on. Festivities start at 11:15 a.m. with entertainment by Jennifer Perri, Jake Shimabukuro, Kapena, Ho'onua and the Royal Hawaiian Band. There will be free popcorn, watermelon, shave ice and EK Fernandez rides, plus $1 specials of hot dogs or chili and rice and a drink. Inflatable games will keep kids entertained from 11:15 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and there will be displays by Honolulu's police and fire departments. Free.

"Let Freedom Ring: On the Wheels of a Dream": At First Presbyterian Church, 6 and 8 p.m. today. Musical directors Roslyn Catracchia and Mary Chesnut present a 25-piece orchestra, choir and special guest soloists. Free. Call 532-1111 for information.

"Musik: The Independence Day Massive": World Cafe, 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. today. Benefit for Musical Youth of Hawaii, features a performance by D-Rue, a breakdancing contest and DJ Awards. Tickets are $10 at the door. Call 599-4550.

Ft. Shafter Arts & Crafts 4th of July Craft Sale: Ft. Shafter Arts & Crafts Building 339, 1 to 9 p.m. today and Friday; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. tomorrow and Saturday. Call 438-1071.

4th of July Arts & Crafts Expo: Ala Moana Center. Local crafters offer their wares for purchase from 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday. There's also entertainment at the Ala Moana Center Stage. Call 955-9517.

Poke recipes wanted

It is time, poke masters, to polish off those recipes for the Sam Choy Poke Festival. More than $15,000 in prize money is at stake for amateur and professional chefs.

The competition will be held Sept. 15 at the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel. Deadline for entries is Aug. 5.

Categories are: Traditional Poke, Cooked Poke, and poke using hot sauce, ogo, surimi, hokkigai, macadamia nuts, soy sauce or tofu. Entry fee is $100 for professionals; $40 for amateurs ($75 and $20 for entries submitted by July 20).

The Poke Festival begins Sept. 13 and includes a golf tournament and a Hawaiian concert. Call (808) 880-3023 for entry forms.

Milk's health drawbacks

KITV reporter Dick Allgire will discuss health concerns related to drinking milk at next Wednesday's meeting of the Vegetarian Society of Hawaii. "What's Wrong with Milk?" will cover cow's milk and other dairy products and the effect they can have on diet and diseases such as osteoporosis, cancer and diabetes.

The society meets at 7 p.m. in the Ala Wai Golf Course clubhouse. Meetings are free. Call 944-8344.

Food Network finds Kona

The Kona Coffee Cultural Festival gains national exposure this evening on the Food Network's "All American Festivals," airing at 7:30 p.m.

The program repeats at 11:30 a.m. tomorrow.

The Kona festival takes place Nov. 1 to 10 this year.
