Former Sen. Ige starts serving sentence

Former state Sen. Marshall Ige has begun serving his six-month prison term.

Ige turned himself in yesterday morning at state Circuit Court and was taken to Oahu Community Correctional Center, according to Deputy Attorney General Kurt Spohn.

The 48-year-old Ige, who served in the state Legislature from 1982 to 2000, pleaded guilty in January to second-degree theft, attempting to evade taxes and failure to file tax returns. The state alleged that Ige improperly took $7,000 from Windward Oahu farmer after threatening to evict him. The state also charged that Ige bilked $30,000 from an elderly Beverly Hills couple.

Police probe hit-run death of Waianae man

Police have opened a negligent homicide investigation following the death last night of a 65-year-old Waianae man who was apparently injured in a hit-and-run accident.

Police said the victim apparently was struck near the intersection of Paakea Road and Mailiili Road. He was sitting in the middle of the road about 8:47 p.m. when a van also struck him. Police said the van driver, a 37-year-old Maili man, was arrested but released. The victim was taken to Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center, where he died.

Police said they opened a failure-to-render-aid investigation and were seeking the driver who allegedly struck the victim first and then fled.
