A mothers sacrifice
recalled in artIT'S a pity it wasn't Mother's Day. That's about the only thing that could have made the story artist Diane C. Kim told Dr. Tim Choy at the Artists in Hawaii exhibition at the Academy of Arts last week any more poignant. Kim said the inspiration for one of the three works she had on display came from a sacrifice made by her mother years ago. When Diane was growing up, the family's finances were limited so her mother hand-made all her clothes. One year, she wanted desperately to be like her schoolfriends and have store bought clothes to wear to school. She got them, only finding out later that her mom had sold her wedding ring to buy them. Now Kim's painting, called "Sacrifice (Mother's Ring)," is a reflection of that generous gesture and gift. Her mom didn't attend the exhibit opening -- she was home caring for Diane's kids so that she could attend. A mother's love knows no bounds ...
NEWSCASTER Mahealani Richardson's mom is thrilled that her daughter, currently with KGW in Portland, has turned down a reporting position at KOMO in Seattle -- a much larger market -- to return to her Hawaii roots as weekend anchor at KITV. All of Richardson's siblings left the nest for the West Coast, so Mehealani figures one reason her mom is so elated is that "she'll have someone to wash her car and clean the fishpond!" She'll be back on the air in September ...

A NEW magazine aimed at Island women hits the newsstand this month. Called "Hawai'i Woman," its the brainchild of Kristine Ellis-Fujimoto and has an all female executive team. Former Miss Hawaii Billie Takaki is managing editor and exec editor is Karen Kenui. Not that women aren't being recognized and written about in this very paper -- witness the first two items and the 50 or so stories about women and Title IX which have been dominating the sports section of late ...NOT enough women's stories to satiate you? Well, publicist Elissa Josephsohn celebrates 25 years in Hawaii and 20 in the publicizing business on July 4 at Compadres, one of her clients from the beginning, with fireworks to follow ... Both the buyer and seller of actor Richard Chamberlain's Round Top home for $4.4 million were women brokers employed by Coldwell Banker, with Tracy Pflueger Bryan representing Chamberlain and Sachiyo Sachi Braden the buyer, a native of Japan ...
