The return of Lily Kahumoku to the Hawaii women's volleyball team has certainly caught the attention of coaches in the Western Athletic Conference. Rainbow Wahine picked
to win WAC volleyball titleThey have selected the Rainbow Wahine to defend their WAC crown in a preseason poll released today.
Kahumoku will rejoin All-American Kim Willoughby in the starting lineup for the Wahine, who topped the poll with nine first-place votes. San Jose State was second, followed by Fresno State, Rice and Nevada. Rounding out the top 10 were SMU, UTEP, Tulsa, Louisiana Tech and Boise State.
UH is coming off a 29-6 season, including a perfect 13-0 mark in WAC play.
Metzger and Wong halted in semifinals
Hawaii's Stein Metzger and Kevin Wong were stopped in the semifinals to finish in a tie for third place yesterday in the Association of Volleyball Professionals Belmar Open at Belmar Beach, N.J.Metzger and Wong will split $5,825 after falling to eventual runners-up Dax Holdren and Eric Fonoimoana 21-14, 21-18. Holdren and Fonoimoana lost to champions Canyon Ceman and Mike Whitmarsh.
Mike Lambert of Honolulu led the tournament in blocks with 23 and finished in a tie for fifth place with teammate Lee LeGrande, a Punahou graduate.
Former Hawaii player Scott Ring teamed with Nick Hanneman to finish seventh. In women's action, Honolulu's Danalee Bragado and her teammate, Monique Oliver, tied for seventh place.
Junior Masters Golf Tourney at Makaha
The Makaha Resort Golf Club hosts the fourth annual World Junior Masters Junior Golf Championships today through Wednesday.The international tournament is put on by the World Junior Golf Foundation and features top junior golfers from eight states and three countries. Tee times are 7-9 a.m. each day. The awards ceremony for the older division, is set for 1 p.m. Wednesday.
