Maui Writers Conference
Aspiring writers who haven't yet signed up for the Maui Writers Conference over Labor Day weekend, Aug. 29 to Sept. 2 at the Outrigger Wailea Resort on Maui, can take advantage of a kamaaina rate of $595, which is $100 off.A $50 discount is available to nonresidents who ask for the Friends of the Conference rate. The conference will feature best-selling writers and screenwriters including John Saul (author of 30 New York Times bestsellers), Dorothy Allison ("Bastard out of Carolina"), Bryce Courtenay ("The Power of One"), Jack Canfield ("Chicken Soup"), Thomas Sawyer ("Murder, She Wrote") and Paul Levine ("First Monday").
A travel writing track will feature Mario Mercado (Travel & Leisure), Madelyn Miller (Travel Lady) and Dewitt Jones (National Geographic).
The five-day conference includes workshops, panel presentations and speeches. Attendees can also sign up for professional consultations with agents, editors and publishers.

The Maui Writers Retreat will be held Aug. 23 to 28, featuring hands-on instruction from authors including Saul and Allison. Students are selected based on a writing sample.
