jberger@starbulletin.comWELCOME THE BREEZE: Jeff Schatz, left, vice president and general manager of New Wave Broadcasting, and Mahlon Moore, program director of FM 99.5 "The Breeze," celebrated the launching of the all-Hawaiian/no-"island music" radio station Thursday with a party at the Sheraton Moana. Ed Ka'ahea, Mel Cabang, Rolando Sanchez, Gaylord Holomalia and Lea Uehara were in the house for a sunset concert that saw the Makaha Sons welcome guest vocalists Bill Kaiwa (singing "Wahine Helela") and Marlene Sai ("Waikiki"). Among those attending was John Quincy Adams, chief of operations of Lifeguards Hawaii State, who reminisced about visiting the Moana in the '50s and how his mother would bribe him with a quarter to "hula" with the dancers.
ALOHA PAPA NO KA 'OI: Kui Benton, his wife, Donovan, and their daughter, Nai'a, enjoyed a lighter moment Friday at the "Lolo No Ka 'Oi" comedy concert at the Sheraton-Waikiki. The show was presented in memory of Kui's father, "Ace No. 1 Local Boy" James Grant Benton, co-founder of the Kanaka Komedy trio, Booga Booga, who died in May. Nai'a smiled and laughed while she watched some of the video clips of her "Papa" performing, but there were misty moments for Kui, Donovan and Debra (Jim's wife), and for many of us old friends and fans of his work.
