1969: Bishop trustee won’t
accept fees on Kona land deal

BISHOP Estate trustee Atherton Richards (who opposed the Kona land deal with Troy Post of Texas) says he'll not accept any commissions or fees based on that deal, which the other trustees approved over his objections. (July 2, 1969) ... A fantastic lineup of stars is set for the black-tie Midsummer Ball, a benefit for Keuikeolani Children's Hospital, at the Sheraton-Waikiki July 17 in conjunction with the hotel's grand opening. Glen Campbell will headline the entertainment, and a number of other personalities will be on hand: Andy Williams, Elke Sommer, Clint Eastwood, Dick Martin, Tom Harmon, Fred MacMurray, Robert Stack and Mayor Sam Yorty of L.A. Tickets for the epicurean banquet are $25 apiece ($100 a pair for patrons) with proceeds used for child-care programs at the hospital. (July 5, 1971) ...

SHERATON'S Simon Cardew and Peter Millard of First Insurance found each other in London last week and took in a play called "The Ghost Who Tiptoed." They ventured backstage after the comedy and found the star, Robert Morley, with his son, Sheridan. Knowing Sherry was an old pal of ours, he mentioned our name and Hawaii, and scotch was poured all around. Morley fils attended UH for a year and met his wife here. Robert told the rest of the play's cast, "You really should go to that lovely part of the world. Everyone's from some other part of the world, and they all get along. It's a simply lovely place." Cardew and Millard ended up being more or less the center of attention backstage, thanks to Hawaii. (July 4, 1974) ...

I PROMISED an update on Joan Wahl, the North Carolinian who married Ricky Francis aboard a United DC-8 Tuesday. I didn't see how she could have changed into her wedding gown in one of those tiny cubicles you find in DC-8s, and she didn't. The stewardesses curtained off the forward galley for Joan, so it can truthfully be said that she started down the aisle from the kitchen! (July 6, 1977) ...

AT Sunday's polo match, actress Barbara Luna, a smashing, well-tanned beauty, sat on the clubhouse lawn after the match and chatted with Fay Parker. Both are ex-wives of Doug McClure. (July 3, 1979) ... Elizabeth Norris of Playboy magazine will be flying in next week to help publicize the August issue of the magazine, which features 17 "Girls of Hawaii," including Miss August, a former isle resident named Victoria Cooke, who once sold time-sharing condos in Hawaii. In fact, Cooke's pictorial was shot here, though she now sells real estate in L.A. Playmate of the month Cooke will also be here along with the other "Girls of Hawaii" for a kickoff cocktail party July 8 at the Ilikai. (July 1, 1980) ...

A LEGION of friends of restaurateur Michel Martin will gather not at his place, but at the Halekulani on Bastille Day Eve (July 13) to salute the grand old man of Hawaii restaurants with a $100 feed to benefit the American Cancer Society. (July 3, 1984) ... After a month in Chicago downing Vienna Hot Dogs and Uno's Pizza, listening to great jazz sounds and cheering/jeering his hometown Chicago Cubs, jazz pianist Rich Crandall is back and will be kicking off "Jazz Night at Bagwells" this week. He and guitarist Jeff Linsky will perform every Saturday night in July from 9 p.m. until midnight. Crandall says that since Cubs manager Jim Frey and White Sox skipper Tony LaRussa were axed during his stay there, he'll be dedicating some tunes to them -- things like "After You've Gone." (July 3, 1986) ...

NOT only does the Mauna Lani Bay Hotel care for endangered green sea turtles, but they've also been housing a penguin -- of sorts. Danny DeVito and family recently enjoyed 10 days of luxury R&R in one of the hotel's bungalows. For DeVito, who played the Penguin in "Batman Returns," it was the second bungalow stay for him and wife Rhea Perlman ...
