Kim begins search
for fourth HSWGA title


Bev Kim beat Fumie Inamura 4 and 2 in the first round of the HSWGA match play championship yesterday at Oahu Country Club.

Kim has won the title three times and will play Sanae Vierra -- who beat Chaok Merkle 4 and 3 -- in the quarterfinals today at 8 a.m.

Desiree Ting, last year's runner-up to Stephanie Kono, beat Leah Jeong 8 and 7 and will take on Kathy Tsukada today.

Also advancing were Bobbi Kokx, Jung Sook Tsubota, Rachel Kyono and Kuulei Kaae.

Local bodybuilders to take over Blaisdell

The Hawaii Islands Bodybuilding Championships and Women's Fitness Contest will be held at the Blaisdell Center Concert Hall Saturday beginning at 8:30 a.m. The finals are scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.

Both contests are national qualifiers, giving local bodybuilders the chance to earn a spot in a national competition.

In addition to the two contests, four time Mr. Olympia Ronnie Coleman and defending National Fitness Champion Tanji Johnson will show off in guest posing routines.

Sailing yachts start on their way from B.C.

The 18th Vic-Maui Yacht Race from Victoria, British Columbia to Lahaina, Maui began yesterday, with 22 boats starting their annual fight with the tricky Pacific High Weather System.

The race can take anywhere from nine to 16 days. Boats are entered from as far away from the course as Brisbane, Australia and Montana.

Hawaii having good showing at tourney

Four Hawaii teams have qualified for the quarterfinal round of the U.S. Youth Soccer Snickers Region IV Tournament following the second of three rounds of pool play yesterday at Salt Lake City.

Advancing with 2-0-0 records are the MSC Gold (Mililani Soccer Club) Under-13 girls, the Honolulu Bulls S.C. Under-16 and Under-18 girls and the Bulls Under -17 boys.

Tryouts tomorrow: Tryouts for the HYSA Volcanoes Under-10 boys soccer team are tomorrow from 4 to 6 p.m. at Kaelepulu Elementary School.

The team will travel to San Diego for the Surf Cup. For more information, call coach Alan Meier at 254-8400.

Second City gets first title

The Makakilo/Kapolei/Honokaihale minor division (9-10 year-olds) All-Stars captured their first District 8 championship held at Barbers Point Pride Field last weekend.

The team is currently in Hilo competing for the State Championship, which ends Sunday.

Kamehameha's Chun takes national title

Mari Chun of Honolulu came from behind to capture the girls title in the National Open High School Golf Championships June 19 at Orlando, Fla.

Chun, who just completed her freshman year at Kamehameha Schools, fired a final-round 75 to win by one stroke with a total of 234.

Fellow Warrior Wendee Augustiro shot a 256 to place 11th and also earn all-American status.
