Sliding down poles,
picking up brushes

NOT all their time is spent fighting fires or making rescues of swimmers and hikers. Three firefighters from Maui, Kimo Kino, Todd McDonald and Rob Spenser are accomplished artisans, and are donating work to "Here's to the Heroes," the benefit art show and sale opening Sept. 11 at Queen Ka'ahumanu Center. Original work by over 70 artists will be on display and available for purchase with 100 percent of net proceeds going to the Maui Firefighters Relief Association and to the families of the ten firefighters lost at the World Trade Center a year ago from Engine 33, Ladder 9 in New York. One interesting item for sale -- a 1955 Madge Tennant brush and ink drawing ...

WITH summer now underway, several celebs have been sighted enjoying the gardens of The Contemporary Museum. At one event for TCM Circle Members, fashion icon Geoffrey Beene was dining on dim sum while enjoying the exhibits. He's in town for a New York Times photo shoot of his Honolulu home. Champion surfer Kelly Slater, who's been helping Disney promote "Lilo & Stitch," put aside his board to view two TCM exhibits. He finally stopped and was prompted by singers from Reign, his back-up group, Kale Chang, Afatia Thompson (son of Jack & Cha) and Tini Grey, one of the luckiest guys in town -- he's the fiance of former Miss America Angela Baraquio, -- Ernie got through the tune ...When Jack Bruce, formerly with Cream, started singing "Eleanor Rigby" at the "Return to Abbey Road" concert on Maui, he forgot the words completely, and a roadie had to give him a lyric sheet so he could finish it, sans bass -- he couldn't play and hold the lyrics at the same time ...
